Climate Crisis training helps women plan mitigation strategies

Violet Ndadzungira (48) from Nyore village, ward 4 in Chimanimani district says participating in the climate crisis training that was organised by the Creative Centre for Communication and Development (CCCD) has helped her to realise that the crisis is not just a temporary phase, but a long term challenge that requires long term mitigation strategies.
Violet is of the participants who took part in the Skills transfer workshop that was organised by cccd on 14 April 2023 and she is now part of a group of women who are implementing climate mitigation activities in the community.
“We have experienced water challenges for a long time now and after the climate crisis training, I have established a small kitchen garden where I grow vegetables for family consumption. I re-cycle water from domestic activities and use it to irrigate the vegetables. The vegetable beds are designed in such a way that water is not wasted through run-off or infiltration,” says Violet.
Violet says food insecurity caused by the climate crisis is impacting on the lives of women who struggle to provide adequate food for their families. She says that establishing her own kitchen garden has given her control over her diet. She says she uses organic fertilisers for her vegetables and that this ensures healthy vegetables and healthy soils.
Violet says since the training, her 15-member group supports each other to strengthen food security. They visit each other’s homes to plan and implement projects. Violet says the climate crisis has destroyed women’s livelihoods and she and her peers are taking back control of their lives by implementing sustainable projects.
